NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- State Senator Kenneth Alexander officially launched his mayoral campaign Monday at the Wyndham Garden Norfolk Downtown.

Alexander represents the 5th District, serving people in parts of Norfolk and Chesapeake.

The Norfolk native also is the president of Metropolitan Funeral Service.

Alexander announced his candidacy last year, joining Norfolk City Councilman Andy Protogyrou and Norfolk Sheriff Bob McCabe in the race for mayor.

McCabe issued the following statement Monday, prior to Alexander's campaign kickoff: "It’s a shame Kenny is running for mayor because he is so well-positioned for Norfolk as a state senator. Kenny is on Senate Finance and other key committees. Losing Kenny in the Senate could mean for the first time in modern history, Norfolk would not have a senator who actually resides in our city. This would be a great loss for Norfolk."

Current Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim is not seeking re-election.
