Four arrested in connection to shooting death of Portsmouth woman

Investigators say the murder of Jennifer Bartell was a result of arguments over a social media post.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- Police arrested four people in connection with the murder of a woman earlier this week.

Emergency dispatchers received a call about a shooting in the 70 block of Cushing Street at 12:46 p.m. on Wednesday.

Medics took 39-year-old Jennifer Bartell, who had been shot in the torso, to the hospital where she died.

Detectives said Friday they had arrested 20-year-old Joshua Bowen and charged him with 1st-degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.

Three other people, 40-year-old Shaunicka Cooley, 19-year-old Albany Pierce, and 38-year-old Shyrayno Jackson have all been charged with accessory after the fact of a felony.

Detectives said Bartell's death was a result of arguments over a social media post.

Arrest warrants obtained by 13News Now said the four suspects confronted Bartell's daughter's friend outside their Cushing Street home.

Documents said Bowen told police he shot Bartell out of self-defense when she came out of the house with a gun "trying to cock it".

He then shot at her "several times" and "emptied his magazine at her" the paperwork said.

Police said Cooley, Pierce, who was Bowen's girlfriend, and Jackson covered up for Bowen when police came to Cooley's home.

Documents said they found him hiding in the home, and a handgun was found.

13News Now reached out to Bowen for a jailhouse interview, but he refused.

The other three suspects have bonded out of jail, police said.

The next court date for the case is May 11.
