PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- In a Tuesday night meeting, Portsmouth City Council voted to give $500 to more than 600 retirees in the city's closed retirement plans.

Retirees in the Portsmouth Supplemental Retirement System and the Fire and Police Retirement System are eligible for the supplement.

Council members agreed that the money would apply only to retires with 20 years of service in the city and to any retiree that retired on disability.

The city is expected to spend nearly $332,000 to pay approximately 663 retirees.
