PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- School officials disciplined a student after people found "Whites Only" and "Blacks Only" signs taped above water fountains at Churchland High School Tuesday.
Portsmouth Public Schools described the signs, which were written on notebook paper, as "unacceptable" and said they were taken down immediately. The school administration began an investigation immediately. The investigation wrapped up Wednesday morning.
School division spokeswoman Cherise Newsome told 13News Now families received robo calls notifying them of the incident which is considered isolated.
Newsome said that students currently are taking SOL tests but that administrators, staff members, and students will participate in workshops that address student conduct and stress the importance of diversity and respect.
In a statement she provided to 13News Now, Newsome concluded: "In Portsmouth Public Schools, diversity is our strength. It’s important that our students, staff and families feel safe and welcome in our schools. We will make every effort to ensure that’s the case in each of our schools."
