SUFFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A ceremony took place Saturday in downtown Suffolk to celebrate the dedication of a historical marker honoring Mr. Peanut!

The new marker commemorates the "birth" of Mr. Peanut by Suffolk native Antonio Gentile in 1916 during a contest hosted by the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company to create a company logo.

Saturday's ceremony included Mr. Peanut, the NUTmobile and Mr. Peanut inflatable.

City officials in Suffolk say there will be several opportunities throughout the month of October for the community to "shell-ebrate" alongside Mr. Peanut, a global icon who began right here in Suffolk!

In addition, the Suffolk Peanut Festival is set for October 6-9 at the Suffolk Executive Airport.
