SUFFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Former mayor Andy Damiani who coined the phrase "Surprising Suffolk" died Saturday at the age of 95.

Damiani served as a member of Suffolk City Council from 1970 to 1992. He held the position of mayor from 1982 to 1986.

Long after Damiani left public office, he continued to be a champion for the city, especially for the revitalization of Downtown Suffolk and preservation of the area's history. Many often referred to Damiani as "Mr. Downtown."

Damiani was born in Richmond in 1921. He attended the Julliard School and was drafted from there into the U.S. Army. Damiani served the country during World War II.

The former mayor passed away at the hospital after he had gone there for a medical problem.

Damiani is survived by his brother and several nieces and nephews.
