SUFFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Authorities say they have arrested a man in connection to a New Year's Day fire at a Suffolk apartment building.

52-year-old Bryan Alan Cadwell is charged with attempted arson of an occupied dwelling, and arson of an occupied dwelling.

Battalion Chief David Harrell with Suffolk Fire said crews arrived at the Suffolk Towers Apartments shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday, to find the smell of smoke and burning wood in the lobby.

The fire was contained to a first floor storage area, but smoke from the fire spread throughout the apartments. The building was evacuated as crews battled the flames. The fire was under control at 4:30 a.m.

All residents were allowed to return after the fire was extinguished and the building was ventilated. No one was injured.

Cadwell was arrested in connection to the fire and is currently being held without bond at Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

Investigators have not offered a motive for Cadwell allegedly setting the fire.
