SUFFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Nine people are without a home after fire ripped through a house in Downtown Suffolk.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews responded to the fire in the 100 block of Clay Street just after 2 a.m. on Monday.

When firefighters arrived, they found the back porch and the extension of the house engulfed in flames.

The residents of the house got out safely before the firefighters arrived.

The fire was under control at 2:39 a.m.

A total of 3 adults and 6 juveniles were displaced in the fire. American Red Cross is assisting them.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
