SUFFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Crews found two workers who were trapped at a landfill dead Tuesday afternoon.

Police said Eric O’Brien Williams, 35, of Portsmouth and Stephen Louis Wilk, 60, of Moyock, North Carolina got stuck in a pipe (vertical concrete culvert at the John C. Holland Landfill on Nansemond Parkway around 11 a.m.

Technical rescue crews from Suffolk, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach were on scene at the 70-acre landfill to help in trying to pull the men from the pipe which was three feet wide and ran 20 feet deep.

Suffolk Police Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will investigate the incident.

On March 10, 2000, a landfill employee died while he and a coworker tried to install wooden support blocks underneath the belly pan of a bulldozer.

OSHA investigated the incident and found the company had not violated any safety rules.
