Suffolk Firefighters respond to elementary school for fire alarm

Firefighters said there was no visible smoke when they arrived at Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School, but there was an odor of smoke in a classroom and corridor.

SUFFOLK, Va. — Suffolk Fire and Rescue is still on the scene at Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School after receiving a fire alarm call.

Emergency Communications received the call on Monday at 3:41 p.m. for the school in the 1200 block of Nansemond Parkway. The school was evacuated as is the usual policy with a fire alarm.

According to Battalion Chief William Kessinger advised that when crews arrived there was no visible smoke, but there was an odor in a classroom and corridor.

Crews remain at the school with school maintenance staff to determine the cause of the odor.
