VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The City of Virginia Beach is advising residents of changes to its emergency alert system.
Recently, the City contracted with a new vendor, Everbridge, to provide the platform for the City’s emergency notification alert and warning system, VBAlert.
Originally launched in 2005, VBAlert is a system used to deliver public safety and emergency-related warnings, and notifications to the public, via a telephone message to their landline phones. It is also a free automated service that delivers important emergency information, such as weather alerts, directly to subscribers’ email inbox or mobile device.
City officials say, because of the new contract, current subscribers' personal information and password were not transferable.
Those who wish to receive emergency notifications to their cell phone or email, will need to create a new account to receive information by text or email.
