Virginia Beach releases Dome survey results

The city wants to know what kinds of features people are looking for at the proposed multi-use entertainment venue. The results will give leaders a better idea of how to move forward.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) — The results are in from the Dome site survey in Virginia Beach.

More than 2,500 people filled out the online survey. The city wanted to know what kinds of features people want to see at the new site. The results will give leaders a better idea of how to move forward.

From January 13 to February 14, people filled out a survey that asked multiple-choice and open-ended questions over the old Dome site. The city plans to turn it into a multi-use entertainment venue.

Some of the top rated results include the want for music festivals/events, surf competitions and taking top spot: water bottle refill stations.

Carolyn Thomas is visiting the Ocean Front.

She said, "It would be nice not just for young people, so I think it would be good for any city to have something like that."

People also expressed the want for the city to preserve as many trees and possible, no chain restaurants, and free parking to locals.

The city has been trying to develop the nearly 10-acre site that formerly housed the Dome, which has been vacant since the building’s demolishment in 1994.

"We are pleased absolutely," said the Virginia Beach Deputy City Manager, Ronald Williams.

This is a locally driven change from beginning to end though. In fact, Virginia Beach native, Pharrell Williams is partnering with Venture Realty to transform the old dome site into a surf park with living spaces, shops, and restaurants.

Now, the city must combine the input from people at their workshops, meetings, and survey results with Pharrell’s project.

Williams said the feedback helps them create something the community values.

"It validated that original vision for what we wanted to do with the dome," said Williams.
