BUXTON, N.C. (WVEC) -- A 75-year-old man died while swimming off the beaches of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Park officials say the man was swimming in water 25 to 50 yards off the beaches in the north end of Buxton when a bystander noticed he may have needed help.

After receiving a 911 call, Dare County EMS, the Sheriff's Office, Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, and National Park Service staff responded and attempted to to save the man's life, however, they were unsuccessful.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Superintendent David Hallac issued the following statement:

The National Park Service's thoughts are with the family after this tragic event. We strongly urge all swimmers to obtain information about rip current and swimming safety prior to entering the waters off Seashore beaches. We ask all of our community partners in the villages to help spread the message about the importance of swimming safety.
