WINSTON-SALEM, NC (WFMY) -- Campaign yard signs have represented division throughout the election cycle. They're used to show the world which "side" you're on.

But some artists want to change that. That's why people like Paige Lester-Niles are painting over old campaign signs with messages of love, friendship and unity.

"I was running one day and saw lots of yard signs and thought, we can transform those and make those into messages of hope and love," she said.

Lester-Niles put up a post on Facebook, asking family and friends for their old political yard signs. She said the response was overwhelming.

"When I saw Paige's post, I thought, I have a feeling this is something that I want to be involved in," Artist Bibi Coyne said.

The two friends decided to host a sign-painting event for the whole community.

"We are a family together and we need to build that unity," Coyne said. "And what is beautiful about our democracy is that we remain united, indivisible, always."

They have hosted two sign-painting events so far. The duo says they plan to host more painting parties in the near future.
