North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services listed the cause of death for Justin Smith and Veronica Darden on their death certificates as "multiple blunt and sharp force traumas."
Smith and Darden were working at Pasquotank Correctional Institution on October 12 when several inmates attempted to break out of the prison.
District Attorney Andrew Womble said Monday that Wisezah Buckman, Seth Frazier, Mikel Brady, and Jonathan Monk each will stand trial on the following charges:
- First Degree Murder (2 counts)
- Burning a Public Building
- Attempted Escape from a State Prison
- Felony Riot
- Attempted First Degree Murder
- Assault with a Deadly Weapon with the Intent to Kill Inflicting a Serious Injury (5 counts)
Womble will decide whether to seek the death penalty for the First Degree Murder charges. Once he makes the decision, he will notify the courts through a Rule 24 hearing which is scheduled tentatively for December 4.
