NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WVEC) -- One person has died in a head-on collision during a suspected speed racing competition on N.C. 12.

The five-car crash happened just after 10:30 a.m. on May 18 near the intersection of US 158 and N.C. 12.

According to N.C. Highway Patrol, 24-year-old Virasack Mack Phienboupha tried to pass another car while heading north on N.C. 12. He allegedly failed to yield the right of way to a Chevrolet truck, hitting it head-on.

The truck became fully engulfed in flames.

The driver of the truck, Thomas Lepage, escaped out of the window. The passenger, Jordan Sanderlin, was pulled from the car by bystanders as the truck was burning.

Lapage was taken to the Outer Banks Hospital. Sanderlin was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Phienboupha was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other drivers, who officials say were involved in the accident, were cited for Spontaneous Speed Competition:
