NAGS HEAD, NC (WVEC) -- An investigation is underway in the Outer Banks after a body washes on shore.

A man staying in a beach house near Surfside Drive in Nags Head spotted the body and called authorities. The body was found partially inside a body bag.

Police believe it was most likely intended to be a burial-at-sea. It's possible the body came ashore due to recently passing hurricanes Maria and Jose churning in the Atlantic.

The body was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office in Greenville.
