DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WVEC) -- The Dare Community Crime Line is offering a special reward for information about a spree of car break-in's.

The one time reward of $2,000 covers break-ins that started in August 2017. The money will be given to those who provide information that leads to the arrest of the responsible individual(s).

Kill Devil Hills police said in that time period, more than 60 cars were broken into. Lieutenant John Towler said countywide, the numbers are double.

During the break-ins, about 11 guns were stolen in Kill Devil Hills alone. In the county, Lt. Towler is estimating the number of guns stolen is also double. Crime Line is also offering $500 for information that helps authorities recover each stolen gun.

In almost all cases, the guns were stolen from unlocked cars. Police said residents should always lock cars and not leave valuables inside cars.

"That would solve 90 percent of these problems because they're not physically breaking into these cars. They're just physically checking the handles," said Lt. Towler.

Police still aren't sure if all the break-ins are connected, but said the thieves in each case appear to be after cash or guns. Electronics and jewelry in some of the reported break-ins have been left behind.
