POQUOSON, Va. (WVEC) -- The Peninsula Health District found a raccoon that tested positive for rabies on Friday.
The raccoon was found in the area of the 100 block of Little Florida Road in Poquoson.
If anyone in the area believes they, or their pet, have been exposed to this critter should contact the health department at Peninsula Health District-Newport News Environmental Health at (757)594-7340.
Contact with the raccoon includes being bitten, scratched or touching the animal's saliva or open wounds.
Rabies is a fatal put preventable disease, usually carried by mammals in the wild.
Prevention guidelines include to vaccinate your pets, report all exposures you have with animals, and enjoy wildlife from a distance.
