NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- There will soon be another way for drivers in Newport News to get from Warwick Boulevard to Jefferson Avenue.
Preliminary work is underway to build a new 4-lane road connecting both roads.
The $69 million road will be an extension of Atkinson Way off Warwick.
It’ll be called Atkinson Boulevard.
The roads will begin at the intersection of Warwick Boulevard and Atkinson Boulevard, extend eastward over the CSX railroad, I-64 and intersection with Jefferson Avenue.
There's also a possibility of adding an interstate interchange as well as an extension to Fort Eustis Boulevard in the future.
Scott Davis II is the store manager at Rick's Cheese Steak Shop on Jefferson Avenue.
He believes more people might stop by thanks to the proposed connector road, which is just right down the street from his shop.
“Driving past it (the shop) it's hidden away but if you take a turn onto Jefferson and there's a shop right there, it's hard to miss it,” Davis says. “I feel like the road would help a lot with the traffic and give me another way to commute to different places.”
Construction is expected to be complete June 2019.
