Rowing from Norfolk to Scotland for a purpose

A rower is about to embark on a unique journey from Cobb's Marina in Norfolk to Scotland.

NORFOLK, Va., (WVEC) -- A rower is about to embark on a unique journey from Cobb’s Marina in Norfolk to Scotland.

The trip is more than 3,400 nautical miles across the Atlantic Ocean.

Niall Macdonald is the owner of the special ocean rowing boat with no engine or sails. The boat even has a special name, Alba.

Together, Niall and Alba could start their trip as early as Wednesday. This is his third try to row Alba across the Atlantic Ocean since 2010.

During his first trip, his back was broken from rough waters, and the second trip had to be canceled because his father passed away.

"I was quite naive at the start,” said Macdonald.

This third time, he planned to row from New York to Scotland but had to move to Hampton Roads because of the wind.

Macdonald is making the trip to his home in Scotland to raise awareness for mental health.

"We all know someone who's had a problem with their mental health,” said Macdonald.

His goal during the trip is to fundraise $150,000 for the Scottish Association for Mental Health.

Macdonald said he used to struggle with depression.

"I have the got to get across the ocean, that's my challenge now, but to other people, they have different challenges which could be just facing up to their day. It could be putting their hand up and saying they need help,” said Niall.

This trip is his new physical challenge.

"You'll get fit as you start rowing as you work your way across, but really it's in your head a lot of it,” said Macdonald. "If I make it across the ocean, I haven't conquered the ocean at all I've just been very lucky.”

However, Niall said the risk is worth the goal of spreading awareness.

"I think life is short and life is for the living, so if we can fill it with experiences, I think that's a good thing," he said.
