The City of Virginia Beach is making improvements to Mount Trashmore

The City of Virginia Beach is making changes to Mount Trashmore after 35 years.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The City of Virginia Beach is making changes to Mount Trashmore after 35 years.

The city is adding steps on the side of the hill, a handicapped-friendly scenic boardwalk, and the skate park is getting an upgrade. The upgrades are costing the city about $2.5 million.

Kite flyers, like Tim Plyer, are looking forward to a new boost up the hill.

“This is a fantastic place. If they’re going to put another million dollars into it, I can only imagine it’s going to get better,” said Plyer.

The handicapped-friendly scenic boardwalk is under construction in front of the water. It's set to open on July 4th.

Virginia Beach Parks and Rec Public Relations and Content manager, Julie Braley, said these plans have been in place for a while for residents.

“So it’s going to have benches and lower railings for people who may be in a wheelchair to be able to view scenically, and stuff like that," said Braley. "I mean, many people love this park, so many people are connected to it. Growing up here, they‘ve left and come back, they’ve spent a lot of time here with their families.”

Local Randy Jackson goes to the park each week to exercise, and he’s excited about the changes.

“I think it’s great like I said, it’s a getaway, sort of, just a few minutes from my house,” said Jackson.

The city spent over $300 thousand to renovate the skate park, which is expected to open Memorial Day weekend.

The City of Virginia Beach also has a future plan for an amphitheater is in the works for summer 2019.
