NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- VDOT said tolling for the new I-64 express lanes is expected to start late January.
Paula Miller, communications manager for VDOT, told 13News Now an exact date has not been set yet as they are still in the testing phase of the project.
In November, VDOT announced plans to activate the tolls by December had to be pushed back.
Virginia Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne said VDOT was not in a position to open the new tolls and she directed the agency to perform an additional 60 days of testing because "this facility's credibility will not be called into question."
Once tolling begins, express lanes will be free and open to all drivers outside of the express lane operating hours which will be Monday-Friday 5-9 a.m. and 2-6 p.m.
