ONANCOCK, Va. (Delmarva Now) -- An Onancock, Virginia, man was sentenced to two life terms plus 20 years for sexual crimes against a family member.
Khalil Muslimani, 70, was convicted in November 2015 by an Accomack County jury on charges of carnal knowledge and sodomy in relation to the crimes that began when the child was just 12 years old.
The victim, who was in court, wept when she heard Judge W. Revell Lewis III give the sentence recommended by the jury at the time of Muslimani’s conviction.
Delmarva Media Group does not report the names of sex crime victims.
Muslimani’s sentencing was preceded by numerous motions by the defendant, who represents himself.
Wheeled into the courtroom by deputies, Muslimani had numerous manila envelopes on his lap.
He presented 18 pages of motions including motions for a continuance, a motion asking the judge to recuse himself, a motion for a mistrial, a motion for dismissal of the charges, a motion to set aside the verdict and others.
The motions were presented in long rambling monologues, sometimes incomprehensible and often veering from the topic.
All were denied.
During the trial, the victim described the first time Muslimani’s touch became sexual in 1997.
“I was just 12. He put his hand underneath my shirt and began to touch my breasts. I didn’t know why he was doing,” the victim told the court at trial.
She said she suffered from guilt.
“It was very shameful because I didn’t understand it,” she said.
She said he would tell her over and over that they had a strong connection.
“By the time I was 16, I was completely dependent on him. He made me feel like I needed him for everything,” she said.
In lengthy questioning by his attorney at the trial and extensive cross examination by then Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Matthew Brenner, Muslimani denied everything.
He spoke on the witness stand for hours going from one subject to the next and seldom answering a question directly.
The jury deliberated only 25 minutes before finding Muslimani guilty and recommended two life sentences, plus 20 years.
After Judge Lewis put an end to almost two hours of rambling monologue, he sentenced Muslimani to two life terms for carnal knowledge and 10 years on each conviction of sodomy.
“The abuse affected her life,” said Lewis.
