NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- State police are investigating a deadly crash that claimed the lives of four people Saturday afternoon on the Eastern Shore.

According to Corinne Geller with Virginia State Police, the crash happened at 12:41 p.m. on Route 13 in Capeville.

A 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe was heading east on Capeville Drive when it pulled across Route 13 into the path of a tractor trailer heading south. The tractor trailer, a fully-loaded car carrier, was unable to brake in time or avoid hitting the Hyundai.

State police say the impact of the crash caused the Hyundai to spin around and the tractor-trailer to cross through the median and come to a stop in the northbound lanes of Route 13.

Two couples inside the Hyundai died at the scene:

  • Driver: Konrad Erbes, 87
  • Front seat passenger: Angelika Erbes, 78
  • Backseat passenger: Jakob Eng, 80
  • Backseat passenger: Theresa A. Eng, 76

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.

State police are continuing to investigate the crash.
