CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- As President-elect Donald Trump begins assembling a cabinet, among the people he is reportedly considering for Secretary of the Navy, is none other than outgoing Virginia Fourth District Congressman Randy Forbes.

Several national publications, including "United States Naval institute News" have reported this week that Forbes "will likely be" Trump's pick.

Forbes is currently chairman of the House Sea-power Readiness Sub-committee, and is regarded in defense circles as an expert on the Navy.

Like Trump, Forbes supports a 350-ship Navy.

Retired Rear Admiral Craig Quigley told 13News Now that Forbes would be a good choice.

"It is hard for me to imagine a person more qualified o be secretary of the navy than Randy Forbes." he said. "For years he has dedicated himself to learning the details, the ins and outs of naval strategy, equipment, acquisition, personnel, policy, all of it. And for him to be considered for Secretary of he navy seems like an absolute natural thing."

Forbes' staff had "no comment" on the reports.

Forbes was defeated in June, when he ran in the Republican primary for the open Second Congressional District seat.

He was elected to Congress in 2001.
