Northampton County Sheriff's Office investigates sexual assault at high school

Sheriff David L. Doughty, Jr. said his office received a complaint about the sexual assault on February 14.

EASTVILLE, Va. — The Northampton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a sexual assault that was reported on February 14 at a local high school.

According to Sheriff David L. Doughty, Jr., an investigation revealed that the assault happened at Northampton High School in Eastville between two students during school hours.

The sexual assault involved two juveniles, whose names are not able to be released. One of the juveniles is charged with abduction and rape and is being held at the Norfolk Detention Center.

Some parents, like Temeko Elder, are worried about their children's safety.

"I'm very concerned because kids leave to go to the bathroom all the time. It doesn't take long for someone to see them and be like come here. Then they drag your child off and [your child is] assaulted,” said Elder.

Northampton High School senior Megan Escalara is worried that school isn’t safe anymore.

"I felt like it was already a safe place and it didn’t really feel like that was a thing that could happen. I know the school is still planning to investigate and do a more thorough announcement about safety and stuff soon,” said Escalara.

The Northampton County Public School Administration is assisting with the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Northampton County Sheriff's Office at 757-678-0458 or use Tip411 by texting "NHCS" with any information to 847-411.
