RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Seven schools in Chesterfield County have been found to have elevated levels of lead in their drinking water.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the school division has recently sent letters to parents at six schools informing them about what the newspaper described as "high levels" of lead.

Parents of students at the Gates Elementary School were notified in a November letter.

The school system had tested roughly 3,700 water outputs for lead at 47 schools. The newspaper reports that a total of 137 outputs were found to have "actionable" levels.

The Times-Dispatch says Virginia code allows a threshold for lead of up to 20 parts per billion in water.

The newspaper reports that the outputs with levels higher than that have been taken offline.
