RICHMOND, Va. (WVEC) -- State leaders are working to update the wording on marriage in the Virginia code.

The current code still defines marriage as an institution between one man and one woman, but the 2015 Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide makes that language obsolete.

On Monday, the commission voted unanimously to submit legislation for the next General Assembly session to remove the language.

They say the code needs to be updated to avoid any possible confusion.
