VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Emergency crews were called to the Oceanfront due to a swimmer in distress, Monday.

The swimmer was an adult male who was unable to swim to shore.

Officials were alerted of the emergency at 2:12 p.m. When they arrived on scene, at 12th St., they learned that other citizens had already entered the water to try and help the men.

Crews deployed a rescue boat. EMS personnel, along with help from a citizen, were able to pull the swimmer to shore. He was then taken to a local area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials are investigating this incident.
