VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A 22-year-old man was sentenced to prison Wednesday for torturing and killing his family cat in 2016.

According to the Commonwealth's evidence, on October 26, 2016 Curtiss Kinzey was in the garage of his home with the family cat. A female family member heard something in the garage and went to check it out. When she walked in she found Kinzey choking the cat and blood coming from the animal's mouth. She ran to change her clothes to take the cat to the vet for help, but when she returned the cat was gone.

Animal Control officers found the cat dead in a trashcan. A necropsy revealed the animal died from severe head trauma due to multiple blows to the head.

Kinzey admitted to killing the cat and pled guilty to charges of Torture Cat Causing Death. He was sentenced to five years in prison, with two years suspended.

Kinzey has prior convictions for Possession with Intent to Distribute, Accommodation, Shoplifting, Petit Larceny, and Driving after Illegal Consumption of Alcohol.
