VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. (WVEC) - On Monday, the Virginia Beach Oceanfront was packed with people celebrating the 4th of July.

"I can't get over how hot and sweaty I get down here," explained one beach goer.

The humid temperatures did not stop many people from hitting the sand and the surf.

During the afternoon, the temperature was in the high 80's, but many say it feels much warmer than that.

Families packed their coolers full of water so they could stay hydrated.

"I like to relax in the shade and just stay cool," a beach goer said.

Virginia Beach Life Saving Service Chief Tom Gill says they deal with heat exhaustion all the time.

Gill said if you're heading to the beach, act like your going to your children's soccer or baseball game.

"Pack the cooler with lots of water and lots of sport drinks. Also pack it with good and healthy food so you can perform from the morning to the night," said Gill.

If there is a problem at the beach, don't hesitate to ask for help.

Gill said, "Go to the lifeguard and let us work with you and make it a better day."
