NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- It's a big day for the crew of the USS Helena (SSN 725).

The Los Angeles-class attack submarine returned to its homeport at Naval Station Norfolk Wednesday afternoon.

On its deployment, the Helena has visited ports in Norway, the United Kingdom, Scotland and France. The 30-year-old submarine traveled more than 40,000 nautical miles, working in the European Command area of operation.

"The guys worked fantastically," said the Helena's commanding officer, Commander Jason Pittman. "We've done four months of missions contributing to national security, bunch of exercises working with our international partners. They've worked very hard and they've come home heroes, as they rightfully should."

The crew includes 15 officers and 129 enlisted sailors.
