WASHINGTON (WVEC) -- President-elect Donald Trump is busy filing positions on his team, and one man he's considering has ties to Hampton Roads.

General James Mattis -- also known by his nickname "Mad Dog" -- is being considered for Defense Secretary. The two met this weekend.

The 66-year-old retired Marine served in Norfolk after he was appointed to command the U.S. Joint Forces Command.

If nominated, he would need some help from Congress. Commissioned officers can only serve as Secretary of Defense seven years after active duty.

General Mattis retired in 2013, leaving him four years short.
