NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A Newport News 5K is taking place on November 5 to thank those who served, and to raise awareness for the issues our injured and ill veterans face every day.

The DAV 5K Run is presented by a nonprofit organization, Disabled American Veterans, that helps more than 1 million veterans a year.

Participants have the opportunity to honor a hero by recognizing that individual on race day by wearing their name on an honor bib.

A signature element of the event is the Motorcycle Honor Ride where motorcycles roll past the runners start and lineup at the runners finish line.

The Newport News DAV 5K has a goal of raising $117,500.

Runners can pick up their packet a day early on November 4, or starting at 7 a.m. on race day.

Registration fees are as follows:

  • Adults- $30
  • Motorcycle- $30
  • Youth- $15
  • Virtual Participant- $40
  • VIP Veteran- $15
  • VIP Veteran Motorcycle- $15
