NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A freshman at Radford University won $1,000 per week, for 10 years from a Virginia Lottery scratch-off.

Sukanya Patterson was about to head home for spring break when she purchased the winning lottery ticket. She won the top prize from a Weekly Grand scratch-off. She bought the ticket from an on-campus 7-Eleven.

“I didn’t scream. I just froze,” said the Newport News native.

Patterson had the choice of taking the full prize over 10 years or a one-time cash option of $469,820. She took the one-time cash option.

The odds of winning the top prize in Weekly Grand are 1 in 4,222,800.

Patterson said she plans on using her winning to pay for her education.
