If you want to vote in the upcoming general election, which is November 8, make sure you are registered.

Monday is the deadline to register to vote in Virginia.

If you're having trouble with the Virginia Voter Registration website, we reached out to the Virginia Dept. of Elections and the Commissioner responded with this statement:

"The Department of Elections online voter registration system is experiencing an unprecedented activity level that has caused it to slow down and sometimes be completely unresponsive. We are working to quickly make changes to vote.virginia.gov that will allow voters to submit online registrations if they still need to register or update their information before tonight’s deadline. These changes will temporarily disable the ability to look at your existing voter record or conduct other business on the site. You should see the changes to the website shortly. If someone can’t get their form to submit using vote.virginia.gov, they should wait a few minutes and try again. The registration deadline is 11:59pm tonight."

North Carolina's voter registration deadline was last week, although due to Hurricane Matthew, the state is allowing some extra time to get the information mailed in:

North Carolina Voter Registration Information

The deadline to register or update your address or party affiliation is October 14th, but some leeway has been given to residents, due to Hurricane Matthew.

Usually, an application must be turned in to a county office by Friday, or postmarked by Friday as long as it was received by Oct. 19. The State Board of Elections now says mailed applications for this fall will be accepted with later postmarks until Oct. 19, as long as the form is dated by Friday.

The adjustment doesn't affect potential voters registering and casting ballots during early in-person voting Oct. 20 until Nov. 5. There's no registration on Election Day.

To register to vote, you may complete and download a printable voter registration form on the State Board of Election’s website: www.ncsbe.gov.

Voter registration applications are also available at county boards of elections offices, public libraries, high schools and college admissions offices. Persons may also register to vote at any DMV office and at certain agencies.

The state board says some counties are looking for alternative polling sites after some were damaged or are now inaccessible.
