VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Staffers at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center released a previously harmed loggerhead sea turtle to the ocean, Thursday.

The sea turtle, named "Maya Angelou" by staffers, was injured in July of 2015 after she became caught in an active dredge. Maya Angelou suffered multiple fractures to the back of her top and bottom of her shell. She also sustained sever bruising and swelling to all of her appendages.

It took over 450 days of rehabilitation before Maya Angelou was released back into the sea.

The staff of the aquarium took to Facebook to wish Maya Angelou good luck on her journey back to the ocean.
