FRONT ROYAL, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say a small plane crashed in the Shenandoah Valley shortly after taking off, killing the 76-year-old pilot.
Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said in a statement that the private aircraft took off from an airport in Front Royal Saturday afternoon with a glider in tow.
Geller says that after the glider safely disconnected, the airplane began experiencing problems and crashed onto private property near the airport. The impact caused the plane to catch fire.
Steven B. Zaboji of Reston, Virginia, died at the scene. The glider safely landed, and no one on the ground was injured.
Geller says the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and will respond to the scene Sunday.
A second plane crash occurred on Sunday, and all three occupants were okay.
