VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The evacuation at Ocrocoke Island is causing vacationers to find another place to relax and some are flocking towards the Virginia Beach oceanfront.
"We are going to be busy starting today," explained Teresa Diaz with The Convention and Visitors Bureau.
On Thursday, Ocracoke Island went dark and is still dark forcing vacationers to evacuate. 13News Now was told crews working on the Bonner bridge broke a transmission cable.
"It's unfortunate that it happened down there but we are the one stop up north," said Diaz.
She continued, saying they've received several calls into their visitors center from vacationers looking for places to stay.
"Do you have rooms? How many rooms do you have? We have efficiencies with families would want if they can't get a house. We have also like cottages and there are always private rentals," she said.
Her best advice is to call hotels ahead. She said right now, there are several vacancies but that could change. Diaz said there is only a small amount of rental homes.
"I made some calls this morning and there are only a handful of them left. They have seen a major increase in their requests just from yesterday and today."
If you are looking for a room, and can't find one, Diaz said to look at Town Center or smaller areas like Sandbridge.
