NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The guided-missile destroyer USS Laboon (DDG 58) returned home from an 6-month deployment on Thursday.

The Laboon was in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility as part of the George H.W. Bush Carrier strike group.

While the ship was under the command of Cmdr. Jason Labott, it conducted a variety of operations with multinational allies.

Two months of operations included counter smuggling which included seizing more than 680 kilograms or $50 million dollars worth of illicit narcotics.

The visit, board, search and seizure team boarded more than 30 flagged vessels.

Two of the oldest naval traditions were also conducted in the 6-month deployment. The Shellback ceremony, for crossing the equator, and the Blue Nose ceremony for crossing the Arctic Circle.

The ship traveled over 50,000 nautical miles.
