VIRGINIAN BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Virginia Beach police arrested a driver who is accused of hitting an officer with a car at the scene of a traffic stop then leaving.
Master Police Officer Tonya Pierce told 13News Now police charged 21-year-old Anthony J. Paul Arizmendi of Chesapeake.
At 12:06 a.m. Thursday, an officer pulled over a driver suspected of driving under the influence near the intersection of the 1700 block of Artic Blvd.
Police said they made contact with the driver of a white Hyundai Elantra, whom they later determined was Arizmendi, but he drove off, striking an officer with the car.
The car headed northbound on Baltic Avenue and crashed into a vehicle with people in it at 22nd Street.
Both cars came to rest in the 500 block of 22nd 1/2 Street. Officers said Arizmendi ran off.
The people in the vehicle that was hit were treated on scene by EMS.
Arizmenid faces charges of Felony Eluding Police, Felony Hit & Run - Personal Injury, Obstructing Justice, Identity Fraud To Avoid Arrest, and Falsely Identify Self To Law Enforcement. He is in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center with no bond set.
The officer injured was treated at the hospital.
