SUSSEX, Va. (WVEC) -- One person is dead following a vehicle crash involving an Amtrak train.
The crash happened around 11:11 a.m. at the intersection of Route 1103 and Route 646 in Sussex County.
Officials say as the train was approaching the intersection, a 2009 GMC pickup truck attempted to cross around the lowered, gated arms when it was struck by the train.
Upon impact, the truck landed several yards away, overturned and caught fire.
The driver died on impact and is unrecognizable.
According to witnesses and the train operator, the gates and warning lights letting motorists know a train is approaching were all in working order.
The Division 5 reconstruction team is investigating the accident. Both routes are blocked at this time as VDOT sets up alternate routes.
