HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WVEC) -- Voter registration numbers are up this year. More than 6,000 people registered this year than in 2012, in Chesapeake alone.

Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, and Suffolk are also seeing a modest increase.

"People in the working class, who maybe haven't been part of the electorate in a very intense way in awhile, coming out, that could be foundation of a surprise performance by Trump," said ODU Political Professor Jesse Richman. "On the other hand, who has been making the big effort to register people, it hasn't been the Trump campaign."

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are hitting the campaign trail Monday, with just a week left before election day.

Polls show Hillary Clinton beating Donald Trump in Virginia. However, the race is tightening nationally, with a new ABC Washington Poll separating the nominees by only one point.

"There was some indication that the race was tightening a little bit before this, but all of that put together means keep your seat belts fastened," said Richman. "It's going to be a bumpy last week."
