NASHVILLE -- Multiple cows overtook a major interstate on Friday afternoon after a truck hauling the livestock overturned, snarling traffic.

The crash was reported just before 1 p.m. on Briley Parkway near I-40, according to Metro Nashville dispatch. As of 4:20 p.m. the northbound lanes of Briley Parkway remained closed.

Emergency crews are asking motorists to avoid the area.

At least two cows died in the wreck. The driver was not injured.

According to Metro police spokeswoman Kris Mumford, Nashville Fire Department crews have rounded up the surviving cows and they will be picked up by another truck.

The cause of the crash is not immediately known.

The roadway was not expected to reopen until at least 5:30 p.m. CT.
