Wintry mix expected for Hampton Roads, VDOT crews ready

A wintery mix is anticipated for parts of Hampton Roads, so the Virginia Department of Transportation is getting ready.

HAMPTON, Va. — Virginia Department of Transportation crews are gearing up to tackle a wintry mix headed to the area.

All day Tuesday, VDOT crews brined several roads, bridges, and overpasses. A mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow are expected ahead of Wednesday morning’s commute.

“We have crews on standby, so if conditions warrant any additional activity. We do anticipate with the combination of brining that we are doing today, and the current pavement conditions that it should ensure melting in those areas,” said VDOT communications manager Holly Christopher.

Christopher said the agency has plenty of supplies including almost 25,000 tons of salt, about 17 tons of sand, and more than 165,000 gallons of salt brine.

“The materials that we use for these circumstances are at 97% capacity. We are fully stocked with everything we need and we are ready to go,” she said.

Drivers said they are hoping the wintry mix doesn’t last all day. Blake Baker said if it does, he won’t be able to work.

“If it’s wet and muddy the big concrete trucks they can’t get to where we need to pour the concrete and you can’t pour concrete under water either,” said Baker.

VDOT officials remind drivers to allow extra time to get where you need to go in the morning, and if drivers see a VDOT truck, to give them plenty of space.
