Woman arrested after allegedly hitting two bicyclists while driving drunk

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) - Two bicyclists are recovering after a woman allegedly hit them with her car at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Mother's Day.

Police say the driver, Andrea Dejesus, was drunk behind the wheel.

According to search warrants, an officer tried to pull Dejesus over for going more than 10 miles over the speed limit, when he noticed her car was dragging a bicycle and someone was laying in the road.

"That's terrible, it's just terrible, and there is no excuse tonight," Community member Keith Voght said. "Absolutely none."

According to the arresting officer, Dejesus was slurring her words and stumbling. Police say her Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) was .26, that's more than three times the legal limit.

“I don't know how she walked to her car, and got in it. Let alone drive it. That is crazy," said Vought.

13News Now met with friends of the two bicyclists. They say the girls are friends and summer exchange students. We're told the one girl suffered a broken leg and has already had several surgeries, while the other girl just got out of a coma. Both are expected to survive.

Vought says this should be a wakeup call for everyone.

"Think twice, about getting in a car, just think once. I have been drinking, I’m not getting in the car. Give the keys to someone else."

Dejesus is in jail facing several changes including DUI and maiming. She will be back in court for a preliminary hearing July 14.
