NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- It's always a treat when you're at a football camp and learning from the best. Now imagine them being current or former NFL players who happen to be from the area. Such has been the case the past 21 years at the annual Hampton Roads Youth Foundation Camp from Christopher Newport University. Today nearly 250 area high schoolers learned from the likes of former NFL greats Elton Brown (Cardinals), Aaron Brooks (Saints, Packer, & Raiders) along with Tajh Boyd (Jets, Steelers). "I'm a product of this", says Boyd, who played his high school ball at Phoebus before going on to Clemson.
The biggest of the names on hand was Super Bowl Champion, head coach, Mike Tomlin of the Steelers who played at Denbigh High School and later at the College of William & Mary. "We're blessed by being from this community", he says. "We want to pour into the next generation of young people that love of football. Help them develop a relationship with the game." Like Tomlin, they were hands on when it came to working with campers who enjoyed the event.
