Hampton University and MEAC agree to separate; school to pay fine

Hampton University said it came to an agreement with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference that will allow the college to move to the Big South Conference as it planned.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- After what could be described as a contentious back-and-forth, Hampton University said Monday it reached an an "amicable agreement" with regards to the school's resignation from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Hampton said in a news release that the university consented to paying a find for failing to meet the MEAC's July 1, 2017 deadline for withdrawal. The release did not say how much the fine was, stating it was an "undisclosed amount."

Hampton University announced in November 2017 that it would leave the MEAC and head to the Big South Conference. The decision brought an end to the HU-MEAC relationship of more than two decades.

About two weeks ago, a news release from the university said that MEAC officials refused to meet with school representatives about the situation that developed after the university's announcement.

With an agreement in place, Hampton University officially will be part of the Big South Conference on July 1, 2018.
