Lady Pirates lose in OT to NC A&T in MEAC finals 72-65

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior Jephany Brown scored 22 points leading three in double figures as Hampton rallied from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit but fell in overtime to top-seeded North Carolina A&T State 72-65 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship Saturday.

Hampton trailed 54-44 with 4:32 left on a free throw by Jade Scaife before scoring the next eight points to trail 54-52 on a pair of Monnazjea Finney-Smith free throws with 1:04 left. After a pair of Alexus Lessears free throws, Brown drained a 3-ball from the top of the key for a 56-55 deficit with 28 seconds.

N.C. A&T had a free throw by Kala Green with 17 seconds left to push the lead to 57-55, but Mikayla Sayleforced overtime with a layup at seven seconds left for a 57-57 score.

In OT, a pair of Allina Starr free throws with 1:45 left gave Hampton a 65-64 lead, but the Aggies answered with the final eight points for the win. Joining Brown in double figures were Ashley Bates with 12 points and four rebounds, while Sayle added 10 and seven boards. Both Sayle and Bates were All-Tournament selections.
